C.S. Lewis begins by introducing the concept of Screwtape’s letters, where Screwtape, a devil, advises his nephew, Wormwood, on how to lead a British man (referred to as “the Patient”) into sin and Hell. The Patient has converted to Christianity, lives with his demanding mother, and attends church. The letters reveal the dynamic between the experienced Screwtape and the inexperienced Wormwood.

Screwtape advises Wormwood to make the Patient view Christianity as an internal, spiritual matter. The goal is to create conflict with his mother after prayers. As World War II starts, Screwtape suggests exploiting the Patient’s uncertainty about the draft. The Patient befriends non-Christian skeptics, and Wormwood tries to make him a hypocrite, but a reawakening of faith occurs after a walk by an old mill.

Screwtape then urges tempting the Patient with sexual pleasures, but the Patient falls in love with a Christian woman who positively influences him. Wormwood reports Screwtape for suggesting that God loves humans. Despite Wormwood’s poor progress, Screwtape clears his name by explaining the analogy. As the war intensifies, the Patient faces danger, and Screwtape advises exploiting his cowardice without pushing him to pray for help.

The Patient dies during an air raid, and his soul goes to Heaven. Wormwood, failing in his mission, faces the consequences. Screwtape, excited at the prospect, declares his intention to devour Wormwood alive, emphasizing the lack of mercy in Hell.
