Katniss Everdeen wakes up on the day of the Hunger Games tribute selection, where they choose who will participate in the brutal competition. Her mother and younger sister, Prim, sleep nearby. Her father died in a mining accident years ago. Katniss goes hunting in the woods with her best friend, Gale. That night, at the reaping ceremony, the mayor explains how the government of North America fell, and the Capitol established the oppressive Panem. A war followed, and the Capitol emerged victorious, using the Hunger Games as a yearly reminder of their control. The mayor introduces Haymitch Abernathy, District 12’s sole surviving Hunger Games victor, who’s drunk and embarrasses himself.

Prim is chosen as the district’s female tribute, and Katniss volunteers in her place. The male tribute, Peeta Mellark, is selected, and Katniss recalls how he once saved her by giving her bread. Katniss and Peeta board a train to the Capitol, where they convince their mentor, Haymitch, to take his role seriously.

In the Capitol, Katniss meets her stylist, Cinna, who designs her dress for the opening ceremony. Katniss and Peeta wear eye-catching outfits that light up, impressing the audience. They undergo training alongside other tributes, including the Career Tributes from wealthier districts who have trained their whole lives. They are later interviewed by Caesar Flickerman, a TV host, where Peeta confesses his long-standing crush on Katniss.

The Games begin as Katniss is lifted into the arena. She avoids the initial bloodshed, heeding Haymitch’s advice. Katniss wanders, finding water, but is injured by a fireball. She encounters Rue, a tribute from District 11, and together they survive. Katniss uses her archery skills to kill Career Tributes, but Peeta is captured by them. She retrieves a bow and escapes, and Peeta helps her evade Cato, a dangerous Career.

Katniss and Rue become allies, foraging and hunting together. They sabotage the Careers’ supplies, but Rue is killed. Katniss mourns her and covers her body with flowers. A rule change allows two tributes from the same district to win, and Katniss finds and cares for the wounded Peeta. They develop a romantic bond. To save Peeta, Katniss kisses him, which helps attract sponsors.

Peeta’s infection worsens, and Katniss knocks him out with sleep syrup to retrieve medicine from the Cornucopia. She narrowly survives a fight but gets the medicine. Days of rain pass, and when it stops, they search for food. Katniss finds Peeta collected poisonous berries, causing another tribute’s death. Cato remains their only threat. Streams dry up, forcing them toward the Cornucopia’s lake.

Cato charges toward them, pursued by mutant wolves made from dead tributes. Katniss and Peeta climb the Cornucopia. The wolves kill Cato, and Katniss shoots him to end his suffering. They prepare to eat poisonous berries to defy the Capitol’s one-winner rule. The Capitol stops them, declaring both Katniss and Peeta as winners.

Returning home, Katniss is isolated for a while, fearing the Capitol’s wrath. In the final interview, Peeta learns about the strategy behind their romance during the Games, feeling hurt. In District 12, they briefly hold hands, hiding their true feelings to protect their loved ones.
