“Where the Crawdads Sing” is a popular novel by Delia Owens that mixes mystery, romance, and growing up. It’s set in the marshes of North Carolina and tells the story of Kya Clark, a young woman who grows up all alone. The book combines her struggle to survive with a murder investigation and uncovers secrets about love and loss.

Book Summary

In 1969, the body of Chase Andrews is discovered by two boys near an abandoned fire tower in a swamp.

The story begins in 1952 with six-year-old Kya, whose family abandons her one by one, leaving her alone with her abusive father. She’s ostracized by the town’s people, called names, and never goes to school.

Kya learns to fend for herself, with the help of a kind man named Jumpin’ and his wife Mabel. Tate, a friend of her brother Jodie, teaches her to read, and they eventually develop a romantic relationship. However, Tate leaves for college and doesn’t return.

At 19, Kya meets Chase, a popular young man, and they begin a relationship. But Chase is not fully committed and eventually marries someone else.

Kya becomes a successful author and reconnects with her brother Jodie, who encourages her to reconcile with Tate.

In 1969, Chase tries to assault Kya, and she fights him off. Later, Chase is found dead, and suspicion falls on Kya.

Kya is arrested, goes to trial, and is eventually found not guilty. She returns to her beloved marsh.

She reunites with Tate, and they live together. Over the years, Kya writes more books, and her friends and family visit her.

Kya dies at 64, and her funeral draws many townspeople. Tate discovers some hidden items that shed light on Chase’s death, but he destroys them to protect Kya’s memory.

I started this book and DNF'd after the first chapter because I just couldn't get into it. So when the movie came out I decided to watch it and fell in love with it. So I decided to pick the book back up and I'm so glad that I did because I could get into it now and I devoured it. This is a sad story but a be a beautiful story at the same time. You will love Kya and Tate's story. I would HIGHLY recommend this book!

I forced myself to read the book before I watched the movie. I hate reading. I wanted to make myself do something different. So I purchased this and read it. It took me months to complete it. I have terrible comprehension skills. However.... once I got Into it I couldn't put it down. I fell in love with the story, the characters, the setting. It's inspired me to read another. I googled books similar to where the crawdads sing and I'm starting another journey. This is a big step for me. Amazing book for sparking my interests into the world of written imagination.

"Where the Crawdads Sing" immersed me in its world, creating an undeniable connection with the characters. As I delved into the novel, I felt like I was transported, not merely reading a story but experiencing the lives of the characters. The author's skillful storytelling and vivid descriptions brought the narrative to life, making the marshes and its inhabitants feel real. The emotional depth and authenticity of the characters made it easy for me to invest in their journeys. This book is not just a read; it's an immersive experience that lingers in the mind, a testament to the author's ability to craft a captivating and deeply resonant tale.

“Dreams of escape- even through death- always lift toward the light.”Ok, I won't lie. I was influenced to read this book when I saw they were making it into a movie. I'd actually heard about it before, but was deterred from reading it due to a few people I knew who read it and didn't care for it.So it came as somewhat of a surprise, that this story and the authors writing really resonated and moved me. Where the Crawdads Sing isn't just a story- it's an experience, sweeping you into the strange, sad, entrancing world of the main character, Kya, who after being abandoned as a child in the marsh land of North Carolina, learns how to survive on her own, isolated from the world, more comfortable with the gulls and grass than people and their prejudice. The chapters alternate between Kya's past and a future murder investigation which makes for a page turning read that is at the same time solemn and almost meditative. Given the many varying reviews on goodreads and amazon, I think it's one of those books that a reader either loves or hates.I felt like I should hate it, as the book delivers some very powerful punches and pictures into the shallow character of humanity without God, but for whatever reason, I loved this book. The authors writing is poetic, breathtaking and lyrical, like the rocking of the boat which Kya spends so much time in amid the marshland. Intertwined with poetry, it's a story of resiliency, survival, prejudice, love, loss and loneliness. ‘Where the Crawdads Sing” is an ode to the natural world, but also a harrowing look into a life with nothing but it.

My sister watched this movie me and fell in love with it. She really wanted to read the book but couldn't find it anywhere. Well I found it on Amazon! She's in heaven. Loved the book more than the movie. Sad and moving story.

I wanted to purchase this book after seeing the film, and have already finished it. It's really a great book, and dives into more details about the "marsh girl's" growing up years than the movie does. In terms of the physical book, it was delivered promptly and was brand new in perfect condition.

I was so torn over this book. The writing is beautiful and descriptive, but the plot dragged in some places and felt disjointed in others. I really wanted to love it, but I also felt like I dragged myself through it a bit.

Enjoyable, mysterious, gripping. “For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet fishing village. Kya Clark is barefoot and wild; unfit for polite society. So in late 1969, when the popular Chase Andrews is found dead, locals immediately suspect her.” I started reading this book because I planned on watching the movie, I enjoy reading books that have been turned into movies prior to watching the movie. This book had me hooked with the building love story and the mystery of the murder. I felt happiness, anger, all while I was playing detective to decide if she was guilty or not. I enjoyed this book and I can only hope the movie is half as good.

Where the Crawdads Sing is about survival, how a young girl survives against all odds, how the land that she lives in protects her, teacher her and shapes her into a the women she becomes.

The loneliness of a small child having to exist on her own is unforgivable. Why didn't her mother or siblings sneak in one of the many times her father was away? Again unforgivable! My heart hurt for her. Was so glad she was able to live her life in her beloved marsh.

I'm almost finished with this book. I have learned to appreciate nature and the creatures that surround us. The writing is superb. The feature character is someone I would like to call a friend. She is courageous, intelligent and loves all creatures.

I LOVED this book. It took me a couple months to get into it. It was slow in the beginning. Then once it got going, I finish probably 75% of the book in 3 days. I couldn't put it down. I was dying to know the ending. A great read and wonderfully written.

I typically don't read fiction but this intrigued me. It could have been nonfiction. I am sure there is a family particularly a woman like Kya who experienced what she did she just hasn't written it yet.

Even worse, the man comes from a wealthy family, accustomed to getting everything they want if only they throw their money at it. Kya has nothing, not money, not family, and few friends.Through Kya, Owens tells a compelling and unforgettable story about a young woman who, despite the odds, manages to become a better human being than most others around her.For those who have seen the movie first - or want to, after reading the book - I am pleased to say that the two versions remain quite faithful to one another.
