“The Terminal List” by Jack Carr is an exciting thriller about Navy SEAL James Reece’s mission to avenge a deadly ambush in Afghanistan. With an unwavering thirst for justice, Reece embarks on a perilous journey, uncovering a complex world of conspiracy and betrayal.

Book Summary

James Reece, a Navy SEAL in Afghanistan, faces a tragic ambush that claims the lives of over 60 men in his unit. Only Reece and another SEAL named Boozer survive. Reece returns home, but Boozer is found dead in what appears to be a suicide. Soon after, Reece’s wife and daughter are killed by a Tijuana gang.

During a medical check in Afghanistan, a doctor discovers a rare brain tumor in Reece. This diagnosis becomes suspicious when the same tumor is found in two of Reece’s comrades. Investigating further, Reece discovers a conspiracy involving businessmen, politicians, and military officials. They control a drug meant to prevent PTSD, but their reckless methods, including injecting Reece’s unit with the drug, lead to the development of brain tumors.

In his quest for revenge, Reece enlists the help of an investigative journalist, a military friend, a wealthy businessman, and a former Army pilot. Uncovering the truth, Reece learns that the drug works without side effects, but he’s already on a mission to eliminate those involved. Racing against time due to his terminal tumor, Reece successfully takes down everyone on his list, including his best friend.

As official investigations begin, Reece, unaware that his brain tumor is not fatal, hands over evidence to the journalist. In a twist of fate, the message revealing the benign nature of the tumor is missed. Reece, thinking he has little time left, sets sail across the Atlantic, while corruption is exposed through the journalist’s stories. The irony lies in the fact that Reece’s life could have been saved, but he remains unaware of the benign nature of his condition.

Jack Carr hit one out of the park. This is a great read. Given his background, it makes you wonder just how bad the “swamp”really influences things.

As the first line in the Preface indicates, this is a revenge novel. Well written and no problems keeping the reader's interest. The plot is quite realistic and relatable. I found a couple areas where I wondered how we got to this spot but still very good. Definitely worth the read if you've seen the TV series first, as I did--and yeah, the book is better.

This book is a slow starter that takes a while to find it's legs. I read the first few chapters over a couple weeks because I found it slightly boring. After the first 4-5 chapters of the book, I finished it in about 48 hours. It keeps your attention but it's not drawing me back for a sequel.

I haven't finished the book yet, a little over half way through. The narrator (audio book) has an annoying cadence that is most pronounced when he is doing accents and additional voices but you sort of get used to it. The story is fine but it's absolutely dripping with unnecessary right-wing political grievances that add absolutely nothing to the story and are extremely cheesy at best. Seriously, not a single once of these references to "hurr durr the libs are bad" enhance the story in any way and only serve to make the author feel better I guess. I had this on my list of books to buy and opted for the audio book instead and I'm glad I didn't invest the time and effort into actually reading this book and can just let it drone in the background while I work instead.

Reading this story quickly replaced all of my spare time. The further I got into the storyline the more drawn I became. This book took me 1 week to finish, True Believe 5 days and Savage Son 2 days…now I'm patiently waiting for The Devil's Hand to get delivered. While reading, I'd pause to search Google for the tech mentioned, which painted an even greater picture of the situation unfolding. Thanks, Jack for gifting these stories to the world, and even though the Amazon series doesn't do it justice, I do believe Chris Pratt embodies James Reece perfectly. Congrats to your success with this series.

I know you have seen "one man army" movies and read the books. The one dude takes down hordes after hordes of enemies in badass and often impractical ways. This book in particular is so much more fun because the plot is not simply a vessel for the killing. Both are present and if you came here from the Amazon show, please know that the book is *truly* better :)

….and it won't be my last. Very good writer and my only criticism is that the “hero” Reece was borderline super human. Not sure if it was realistic but certainly entertaining.

It's funny how a movie based on a book can be radically different than its printed version. I was up half the night because I couldn't put it down. I was shocked that Reese's buddy Ben was heavily involved.

Having recently finished several books in some “heavier” genres, I decided to read Jack Carr's first book, The Terminal List, due to its many 5-star reviews for its action-oriented plot. Having just finished it, it well satisfied my need for action and excitement…but that's about the only basis on which I'd rate the book very highly. As such, if possible, I'd give The Terminal List a 3 1/2 star rating, but I raised it to 4 stars to fit with Amazon's rating system. While there was nothing I specifically disliked about this book, there were a few issues that prevented me from rating this book higher. These were as follows: (1) while the main plot kept me engrossed, to keep me from giving any spoilers I'll just say it was somewhat simplistic and absent of any sub-plots. Further, I found its few intended big surprises to be not surprising; (2) the main character, while definitely heroic in his actions, was just serviceable, and the many secondary characters were mainly one-dimensional in sc...More

(3) while the main character's “plan for revenge” seemed virtually insurmountable, everything seemed to fall in place too easily for him in regards to his ability to accomplish his plan.Despite my perceived flaws with Jack Carr's debut novel, I enjoyed The Terminal Man and expect Carr's improved his writing skills well enough in his second book to make me plan to read it soon.
