“The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” is a novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid. It tells the story of Evelyn Hugo, a famous Hollywood actress, and her seven marriages, personal secrets, and the challenges of fame and love. The story is revealed through interviews with a journalist and is a captivating tale of glamour, ambition, and identity.

Book Summary

In this novel, film star Evelyn Hugo opens up about her life to journalist Monique Grant. At 79 years old, with her family and ex-spouses gone, Evelyn is ready to share her true story, which she kept secret for years.

Monique, a struggling writer dealing with a separation from her husband, throws herself into researching Evelyn’s life for an interview. Evelyn offers Monique exclusive rights to her biography, and Monique is puzzled by the gesture. The book follows Evelyn’s seven marriages and intersperses conversations between Monique and Evelyn during the interview.

Evelyn’s early life in a poor Cuban family in Hell’s Kitchen shapes her dreams of becoming an actress. She marries Ernie Diaz, a neighbor who is going to Hollywood. Evelyn uses her allure to connect with Hollywood producers, including her lifelong friend Harry Cameron. She even changes her appearance and background to fit the Hollywood mold. She divorces Ernie to pursue her career.

Evelyn then falls for fellow actor Don Adler, despite his abusive behavior. She hides the abuse and continues to gain fame. When she meets actress Celia St. James on the set of “Little Women,” their friendship grows, and Evelyn eventually leaves Don for Celia. This revelation surprises Monique, who learns that Celia was the love of Evelyn’s life.

To revive her career, Evelyn stars in a successful French New Wave film. Worried about their relationship being exposed, she marries and divorces rockstar Mick Riva to create a scandal. Evelyn also gets pregnant but has an abortion, leading to a rift with Celia. They don’t speak for five years.

Back in the present, Monique separates from her husband, inspired by Evelyn and Celia’s love story. In the past, Evelyn enters a false marriage with co-star Rex North to boost ticket sales. When Rex falls in love with someone else, they create a fake cheating scandal. Harry pretends to be Evelyn’s lover, and they decide to get married.

Evelyn and Celia reunite at the Academy Awards and live together with Harry and John, who is Celia’s fake husband and Harry’s lover. Evelyn and Harry have a daughter, Connor, and share a deep platonic bond. When Evelyn shoots a love scene with her ex-husband, Celia feels betrayed and leaves. John dies of a heart attack, and Evelyn helps Harry recover by involving him in a film.

After winning Oscars, Max, the director, proposes to Evelyn, but their marriage turns sour as Max is more infatuated with the idea of her. Evelyn and Celia try to rekindle their relationship, but Celia is dying of emphysema. Celia wants to live in Spain, leading to conflict with Harry, who eventually falls in love with another man. A car accident results in the man’s death, and Evelyn conceals the truth about Harry’s involvement.

Monique discovers that the man who died in the crash was her father, and she confronts Evelyn. She also learns that Evelyn is dying of breast cancer and plans to end her life with dignity. The book ends with Monique’s article announcing Evelyn’s biography and her bisexuality.

Avoided due to the hype. Friend encouraged I seek this out, so glad I did. Fun read. Well told story about a Hollywood Icon, that never takes where you think it's heading. What a delight. One of those books you're excited to share.

Have a fan of this author for some time now. This book was voted on by my book club Mocha Girls Read. I'm glad it was chosen. This book is something that I could as a TV Series. The characters were like old Hollywood. There were lots of twists and turns and lots of secrets like any Hollywood drama should. The writing was great. I totally enjoyed this book. If this book is on your TBR list, pull it out you'll totally enjoy it

The first couple chapters are not indicative of the rest of the book. Written with excerpts from newspaper stories and multiple relationships for the main character, this book has so many aspects and I really liked it. I would recommend.

This has been on my TBR list for ages, and I'm SO glad I finally took a break from some of the fantasy series I've been indulging in to devour this incredible book. I read it in a week, which is a major feat for a new mom of two under two 😅It's a beautiful, gripping, heartbreaking, and sometimes twisted tale of a profound female antihero. The writing is phenomenal. The characters are complex and well thought out. The plot is steady and intriguing. My only gripe, through no fault of the author's, is that I knew the gist of the final twist before it was revealed. However, I do that with most books I read and frankly I'm annoyed with myself 😵‍💫Again, pure excellence 👏🏆 I hope the movie does it justice!

Wasn't sure I'd like this story as a male reader, however it's well-written and well-paced. Good development of the characters. A good beach/vacation/inside on a winter day book. The twist is a bit predictable but still there is a satisfying emotional conclusion.

Read this at lightning speed! The hooks sprinkled throughout really did their job and I cried like a baby at the end. A complicated and beautiful story.

It's a really good book so far, it did come a little damaged but that's alright just the cover, no pages missing or anything waterlogged which I'll definitely take a little scrape in the cover over that any day.

Sometimes, when books blow up on TikTok, they are hit or miss. This was an absolute hit! I was on the fence, but gave it a shot and finish it in just a few days. I was always yearning for more. Needing to know about the next husband or the next movie or the next scandal. Every single character was interesting and as much as you kind of want to hate Evelyn, I kind of loved her..

Listened to on Audible. Glamor, death & mystery! WONDERFUL story with a serious twist most won't hear coming. Enjoyed the 'voices' of the story tellers too. Written so that one can almost feel your listening to the latest tabloid telling stories about the 1960-70's starlets.

This story was not at all what I expected, and I love that in a book. When I think of telling a friend what it's about in a single sentence there are so many options:***********LITTLE SPOILERS IF YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE BOOK ***********It is about an actress making her way in old Hollywood. It is about a young journalist making a name for herself. It is about women owning their sexuality proudly. It is about gay rights as civil rights. Mostly it is about love, finding it, losing it, how to keep it.

This was a fun, quick read. I think I read it in a weekend. It kept me interested and the little twist at the end was something I didn't see coming and I usually see the these coming. Also, I got the recommendation from BookTok, which has a terrible track record for me. I usually buy into the hype and then hate the book, but this one didn't disappoint.

This was such an enthralling read. I was so absorbed with Evelyn and her struggle and saunter and strut through her life. This was such a complex story about owning yourself and every form of yourself you take on as each choice changes you irrevocably from the person you were before.I so admire the way Evelyn was written, with the emphasis of rejecting regret regardless of the pain for herself and for those around her. She lived a life brazenly, proudly, cowardly and hidden all at once. It's been a minute since I've read a main character who exists in such the virtually honest sphere of human. Flaws and all. There's a reason this book has the reputation it does, there a reason it's popular and there no shame in reading it because of that because it's good to read a good book.

I just finished reading this and like the title says, it did take me a minute to get into. I was afraid TikTok overhyped it. I'm glad I kept reading because I really enjoyed the book. The story definitely got good a little before the half way point.

What a beautiful, yet tragic story of love and sacrifice and selfishness… a devastatingly honest look at who we all are or are capable of being as humans.

Omg where do I start? I read quite a few reviews on this book before I read it. I know everyone has their opinion, but I felt like a lot of the reviews were not what I expected. Some were down on the book but I want to say that there was one review (I cannot remember the reviewer lol) but she was spot on.This story is very much like following the lives of Elizabeth Taylor, or Marilyn Monroe. While you're reading the book, you are entranced by the actress, and the things that she does, and says. From the time she was a child until the time she passed, this woman was so many different faces and personalities. She keeps you wanting more. The love that Evelyn shared with everyone in her life, regardless of a marriage, or just a friend she always looked out for herself while trying to please others. That being said, she could be very secretive, and did not want to cause trouble for herself, and her loved ones.I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and reading about all of the characters. Lol I believe that she did a fantastic job with this book, and I look forward to reading all of her books.

This book has been sitting on my shelf for months as I've been working through my digital TBR from the library on my Kindle. Once I finished it, I wished I would have read it so much sooner, it did not disappoint!
Following the story of Evelyn Hugo, glamorous actress, was so full of ups and downs that I devoured this book in 48 hours. There were parts of this story that were jaw dropping and completely unexpected!
(That ending though??) The threads of love, loss, and the cost of fame crafted a beautiful story that has altered my perspective on Hollywood. My heart breaks for the men and women who have had to deny who they truly are in fear of the way they will be perceived, whether it impacts their image or they face violence.I loved the writing style and the way Evelyn's story intertwined with the “present day” Monique was going through. I was so proud of Monique by the end as you could feel her becoming more confident through her time spent with Evelyn.

The pace of the book was great and the jumps between past and present. I say saddening because most the time I was just sad for these characters and how they couldn't choose happiness then I remember the time this all took place in…. My heart broke for Harry and John and Evelyn and Celia. I wouldn't call it a happy ending overall but I'd call it a satisfying one as Evelyn did answer my questions and wonderings… it would be interesting to see what happened with Monique in the end though…
