“The Secret History” by Donna Tartt is an exciting novel about a group of smart college students. They get caught up in a murder mystery at a fancy New England college. The book looks at guilt, obsession, and how being really smart can have some serious, dark consequences.

Book Summary

In 1983, Richard Papen moves from his hometown in Plano, California, to Hampden College in Vermont because of a beautiful brochure. He joins an exclusive ancient Greek program taught by Professor Julian Morrow, along with five wealthy students: Henry, Bunny, Francis, and twins Charles and Camilla. Richard hides his economic background initially but eventually becomes friends with them, especially after spending time at Francis’s country house.

During winter break, Richard stays at the college, working for a psychology professor in a cold warehouse. He gets sick and is rescued by Henry. Later, Richard discovers that Henry and the others planned to escape the country but couldn’t afford it. They had a wild party, killed a farmer, and kept it a secret from Bunny, who found out and blackmailed them.

Henry contemplates poisoning Bunny but decides to push him off a ravine during a hike. Richard wasn’t supposed to be there, but Bunny shows up, and they push him off the edge.

Bunny’s body is found days later, leading to FBI involvement, suspected drug dealings. When they return from Bunny’s funeral, the group starts drifting apart. Charles becomes reckless, Francis suffers from anxiety, and Richard realizes their manipulative actions.

Charles grows paranoid about Henry and disappears. Richard and Francis search for him and discover that Camilla and Henry have a romantic relationship. In a chaotic confrontation, Henry shoots himself after whispering something to Camilla.

After Henry’s death, Francis, Charles, and Camilla leave the college, leaving Richard as the only graduate. Richard visits Francis and Camilla after Francis’s suicide attempt, but Charles and Camilla stop talking. Richard remains in love with Camilla and continues to dream about Henry, despite the passage of time.

This book started off in an intellectual way. It seemed like it was going to be about the Ivy League schools and cliques I've always wondered about. I got about halfway through and thought why am I forcing myself to read this trash. It became extremely repetitive, weird, and just dark, dark and more dark. I do not recommend this book on any level.

I did enjoy this book and I didn't too. There reached a point where I wanted to just get through with it. However, it was very interesting. It would be great for some and tedious for ithers.

I bought a new copy, and although it is mostly new, it does have some damage. I normally wouldn't mind but a little disappointing when you're expecting a certain quality and it isn't met.

After reading The Goldfinch, this book was such a major disappointment. It just rambled and nothing significant seemed to be happening. I just gave up and returned my loan from the library, such a major waste of time.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It is a thriller from start to finish, although long, you won't want to put it down.I had never read a book by this author until now, and I highly recommend it.

Donna Tartt swept me away with this novel. I had already read The Goldfinch and loved it but The Secret History sucked me in and I felt as though I was always in the room throughout the story. She develops her characters with intricate care and they can be disturbing. A dark, twisting and surprising tale.

The characters seemed both young and old. The plot flows with hiccups, but draws you in to find what comes next. It is most unbelievable that these young men and women were able to continue on the path to self destruction without interference. As always, I want to read on.

The writing style is wonderful. After 30 pages, I couldn't relate to the characters or the plot. I didn't find the story suspenseful, but rather a drudgery.

This was a good story, but vastly overrated in my opinion by many people that want to consider themselves literary experts. It is long and drawn out, and perhaps there is literal beauty in it, but at the end, it was just the story about kids doing something horrible to a friend and then the ramifications of living with that guilt and all that happens in the aftermath..The story wasn't bad, it just wasn't exciting, suspenseful or dramatic for that matter.SPOILER ALERT:Although, from the very beginning, we know that bunny was been killed by his friends we don't know exactly why. The author takes us on a long journey to find the reason and I could honestly see a scenario like this playing out in real life. The nuggets dropped by the author that led the reader to think there was more to the story were never fully revealed. Am I the only person that thought Camilla and Charles incest was a little weird? The fact that the other characters didn't mind that it was happening?I can't say I would...More

This was the most interesting book I've ever read… for reasons I am entirely able to articulate. This story, while intricate and captivating within the pages, is circuitous and strange as the day is long. I literally had to look up what over 100 words in this story meant and I had a difficult time understanding why the author chose to include copious accounts of arbitrary events, but I still found this book winsome. A fellow reviewed shared that this is a book about what makes life meaningful, by showing us what meaning is not and I feel that to my core. A solid 4 star read. I hope to God high school English teachers swap out the Lord of the Flies (snooze fest) for this compelling story.

I just finished reading this novel today, Halloween night. It had some spooky stuff going on in it, but all I can say is that it was truly a remarkable story!! There was so much there… Love, Life, Growing Up, Adventure, Romance, Thrills, Suspense, Death, and so powerful written!!It's difficult to understand that this novel is a First Book written by Ms Tartt?!!! A Debut novel if I had not known this I would have thought it was a writer who had written several books before this one!!Definitely worth your time and money!!

This book felt like those that you read in high school English where you know there's important themes but the characters and plot suck so you're just so bored reading.

So I call it a problematic favorite because, I mean, 1992 permeates certain social politics (namely painting the singular queer character as predatory, intentionally or not).I also want to note, for anyone who might see this on an LGBTQ+/queer book list that it is NOT a queer book or queer story. It features one queer character though this aspect of his character mostly comes out as a plot device.Overall, however, this is a very well-written book, the prose and voice is nearly perfect. It can take a while to read, and at times seems as if it's never going to end, but I think it's worth it. The prose is beautiful enough to make me want to read it again and again.

A epic dark academia coming of age story filled with interesting characters that struggle with family, school, relationships, drugs, morality, karma, and death. I think this is a better book than the Goldfinch but they're both wonderful. Might be the best book I've ever read, satisfying from the first page to the end.

Could be me but this book was the most boring book I have ever read. It just went on and on and on. Nothing happened that held my attention. Perhaps I don't know "literature" but this is just a book I would not recommend. The beginning held my attention but then nothing of interest seemed to happen...whatever the author was trying to convey could of been done in 100 pages... what a waste of time

I read this as I started to get into dark academia, but didn't really love this. It was a pretty slow burn and to me didn't really have any peaks. The pace of the book wasn't good in my opinion.

Just awful. The characters are obnoxious alcoholics/drug addicts and the story is incredibly tedious, the author continually describes events and conversations that do nothing to move the plot forward. This is the worst novel I have read in a long time.

This book is long, boring, and a complete waste of time. It takes over 100 pages just to get into it. Then right when you think it's finally going to get interesting it doesn't.

Have another drink. This is a promising story tediously told. Cut the smoking and drinking sentences and it would make a complete tale of a decent length.

The story itself is great, but there are pages of the book that are loose in my copy - if I were to hold the book upside down by both covers around 10-15 pages would just fall out.

I've read this book several times and it's one of my favorites. I thought I'd like to hear the audible version. Donna Tartt is a great writer but her narration is awful. In the book the main character is a young man from California. Ms. Tartt has a very pronounced southern accent. When she talks with Bunny's voice it is fingernail scraping blackboard awful. His character is described as sounding like Thurston Howell from Gilligan's Island. She sounds like that description as much as Dolly Partons does. I usually like authors reading their own book but I've been tempted several times to stop listening to the narration in the middle of the book. I'm persevering because the story is so good but I can't recommend the audible version.

This is truly, at its core, exemplary of the dark academia aesthetic. I knew absolutely nothing about this going into it, and (wrongly) assumed it would be a somewhat juvenile retelling of like, Greek myths or something. It is not.The Secret History is a truly compelling story that follows a small class of eccentric weirdos at an east coast college who are themselves exploring their relationships. It's got chilly fall vibes, east coast foliage, rainy days, book worms, with a touch of cultured sophistication. And, on top of all that, it's a fascinating murder mystery that had me on the edge of my seat; I could not put this down until I finished it, and that's saying something because this book is dense ash.If you read Babel, you should read this!

I have not read a book of this level since my ap courses in high school. I actually listened to the audiobook via Audible first and I can definitely say it's worth a listen. It's read by Donna Tartt herself and it was easy for me to follow along. The story itself is magnificent, slow building, full of detail, heart wrenching & simply amazing. After finishing I could not stop thinking about it for days. It's dense and can be difficult to understand but again I highly recommend the audio book. Just read it.

The academic overlay of this story adds an intriguing element, but can also be tedious and repetitive. While there is no mystery as to the murders, the tease of the sexual interplay and sexuality of the characters is the source of the mystery. While is read this, I felt compelled to continue even as I was begging for a final act.

Reminded me of Lord of the Flies and how isolationism influences human behavior without the barometer of social pressure as a guide.
