“C.S. Lewis’s ‘The Screwtape Letters’ is a unique novel written in the form of letters from a senior demon, Screwtape, to his nephew, Wormwood. In these letters, Screwtape offers advice on how to tempt humans. The book offers insightful and satirical commentary on human nature, morality, and the Christian faith, delving into the dynamics of good and evil.”

Book Summary

C.S. Lewis begins by introducing the concept of Screwtape’s letters, where Screwtape, a devil, advises his nephew, Wormwood, on how to lead a British man (referred to as “the Patient”) into sin and Hell. The Patient has converted to Christianity, lives with his demanding mother, and attends church. The letters reveal the dynamic between the experienced Screwtape and the inexperienced Wormwood.

Screwtape advises Wormwood to make the Patient view Christianity as an internal, spiritual matter. The goal is to create conflict with his mother after prayers. As World War II starts, Screwtape suggests exploiting the Patient’s uncertainty about the draft. The Patient befriends non-Christian skeptics, and Wormwood tries to make him a hypocrite, but a reawakening of faith occurs after a walk by an old mill.

Screwtape then urges tempting the Patient with sexual pleasures, but the Patient falls in love with a Christian woman who positively influences him. Wormwood reports Screwtape for suggesting that God loves humans. Despite Wormwood’s poor progress, Screwtape clears his name by explaining the analogy. As the war intensifies, the Patient faces danger, and Screwtape advises exploiting his cowardice without pushing him to pray for help.

The Patient dies during an air raid, and his soul goes to Heaven. Wormwood, failing in his mission, faces the consequences. Screwtape, excited at the prospect, declares his intention to devour Wormwood alive, emphasizing the lack of mercy in Hell.

Simple read. I loved the insight of how easy it is for Satan to find any little thing to tempt anyone and how he can corrupt good things and twist them into things that can be used for evil.

Have only recently come to understand what a prolific and truly gifted writer CS Lewis was! Totally enjoyed his Chronicles of Narnia series as a child/young adult. Didn't know how many other wonderful, entertaining and inspiring books he'd written for adults! This story is captivating, clever and shares a critically important message that resonated when it was originally written and is especially relevant in today's society. Highly recommend!

As I read the letters of Srewtape to Wormwood, I became more and more vigilant of Satan's triggers that cause us to sin. There whole goal is for mankind to be lost in sin.

Everyone is going to hell. Trade unionists, artists, film stars, communists, fascists, liberals, crooners and sculptors who work with clay. It was an interesting read and I would probably recommend it but it definitely came off as CS Lewis getting mad about the modern world.

Upside down and backwards from most Christian tracts and supremely effective , but must make time to spend with each chapter .

I've read this book before, and thought I would give it as a gift to a friend. She absolutely loved this book and it's on two more CS Lewis books. The paperback version is small but sturdy with a nice font. This was a great purchase.

The person I bought this for just recently started to read the book (almost a year after purchase). The pages are falling out as he turns. Can't return at this point but am very disappointed to say the least. You expect a book to be put together correctly and is a bit embarrassing to give as a gift for it to fall apart.

As always C.S Lewis delivers a very well written, very thought provoking story. Not only does he shine truth into our world today, he makes us start to take a much deeper look into ourselves, our hearts and minds.

THE SCREWTAPE LETTERSC.S. LEWISReview by Author Roy MurryPeople say, "The Devil made me do it," as a joke referring to demons controlling the actions of a human. Some have used this state of mind to defect from their actions in murder trials.SCREWTAPE, a teacher demon to Wormwood, explains how The Father-From-Below wants Wormwood to trick his human (Patient) out of his soul. Each letter chapter instructs the novice demon on how to sway his patient against the ENEMY (God and Christian religious norms). The prose is hilarious, profound, and thoughtfully written. C.S Lewis's understanding of human nature comes alive in the letters. These conflicts in behavior will enlighten the reader. The reader's mind will reflect on their life's progress.SCREWTAPE LETTERS are a must-read for the Inquisitive Mind. You will read each letter several times, as I will.

This book is eye opening and unique as it takes the place of a tempter in how they might tempt a human into unbelief in God. It's crazy to see how easy it can be and Lewis's point is that even God things at the start can be twisted by the tempter. Great read and I highly recommend.

It's amazing how the author is able to write about how demons see things and how they use their intelligence to tempt us. I found myself saying, Wow that's so true so many times.Possibly even more Amazon's was Screwtape's description of what he called "demonic democracy" in Screwtape Proposes a Toast. He wrote this in 1959 England, but it describes a political movement in the USA today. Again, Wow!

The premise is a good one. But the vernacular is so dated, it makes this a really tough read. 3*'s though for the amount of thought regarding the Christian's journey through life as seen through the demons we all face.

This book is not only extremely entertaining, it gives great insight into the mind of evil.No matter your religious beliefs, the conversations between Screwtape and Wormwood will have you connecting dots concerning today's world events. And amazingly this was written in 1941. I'm writing this review in 2023 and it is just as relevant. At under 75 pages, no one can use the excuse that they don't have time to read this book. I highly recommend it be in everybody's library

This book, C.S. Lewis's "The Screwtape Letters," is the reading selection for our Ladies Book Club this month. I needed to get a copy quickly, and this company had one listed for a reasonable price that could be here within a few days. The condition stated "Good." I have received other "Good" books from various vendors and have been pleased with them. This one did not disappoint. Due to its age, there is some discoloration on the edges of the paper, but nothing to detract from the text. It is easy to read, with no torn pages, markings, or notes, and the cover is in very good condition. It even arrived a day earlier than stated in the listing. I'm completely satisfied with this purchase.

This is a great book. The outside is not hard but it does have a protective outer portion. The pages have a old looking feel to them, which makes it kind of fun.

I've read this before. I am sure I'll read it again. It's really deep and intellectual. Much of it goes over my Head. But many times, something is said and I can clearly feel the encouragement or the rebuke. I know I have a long way to grow and this Book is one of those that helps me keep my Eyes on the Way.

Great book. Quite philosophical and deep but also useful and relatable. I can say it personally put my mind at ease in some ways but also made me aware of things I need to keep in check to live a better life. It has made an impact on me as someone who is trying to become a better Christian and increase my faith. But I can also see how it can be a unique interesting read for a non religious person who could make use of some lessons to help them be led to what philosophers call "the good life". Main thing I got out of it is live a balanced, joyful life with loving relationships. Whether you can do that without God, I don't know, but I believe this book helps those reading it understand that it's easier if you do. Whether it's worldly desires, obsessions, impusivities, vices, or demons, something is always trying to muck up our journey to full life satisfaction.

This book is a nice reprint of the classic. It has a nice cover and the pages and print are high quality. The pages are unevenly cut on the long edge as a decorative feature.

A classic book, I believe, no matter what your faith/religion/spiritual belief system may be, this includes atheists and agonistic, should be read. It's a fun read, and it also challenges your grey matter.
