“The Hunger Games” is a dystopian book by Suzanne Collins. It’s set in a future society named Panem and tells the story of Katniss Everdeen, a young girl who volunteers for a deadly televised competition where kids have to fight to the death as punishment for a past rebellion. The book discusses themes like survival, rebellion, and the impact of having too much power.

Book Summary

Katniss Everdeen wakes up on the day of the Hunger Games tribute selection, where they choose who will participate in the brutal competition. Her mother and younger sister, Prim, sleep nearby. Her father died in a mining accident years ago. Katniss goes hunting in the woods with her best friend, Gale. That night, at the reaping ceremony, the mayor explains how the government of North America fell, and the Capitol established the oppressive Panem. A war followed, and the Capitol emerged victorious, using the Hunger Games as a yearly reminder of their control. The mayor introduces Haymitch Abernathy, District 12’s sole surviving Hunger Games victor, who’s drunk and embarrasses himself.

Prim is chosen as the district’s female tribute, and Katniss volunteers in her place. The male tribute, Peeta Mellark, is selected, and Katniss recalls how he once saved her by giving her bread. Katniss and Peeta board a train to the Capitol, where they convince their mentor, Haymitch, to take his role seriously.

In the Capitol, Katniss meets her stylist, Cinna, who designs her dress for the opening ceremony. Katniss and Peeta wear eye-catching outfits that light up, impressing the audience. They undergo training alongside other tributes, including the Career Tributes from wealthier districts who have trained their whole lives. They are later interviewed by Caesar Flickerman, a TV host, where Peeta confesses his long-standing crush on Katniss.

The Games begin as Katniss is lifted into the arena. She avoids the initial bloodshed, heeding Haymitch’s advice. Katniss wanders, finding water, but is injured by a fireball. She encounters Rue, a tribute from District 11, and together they survive. Katniss uses her archery skills to kill Career Tributes, but Peeta is captured by them. She retrieves a bow and escapes, and Peeta helps her evade Cato, a dangerous Career.

Katniss and Rue become allies, foraging and hunting together. They sabotage the Careers’ supplies, but Rue is killed. Katniss mourns her and covers her body with flowers. A rule change allows two tributes from the same district to win, and Katniss finds and cares for the wounded Peeta. They develop a romantic bond. To save Peeta, Katniss kisses him, which helps attract sponsors.

Peeta’s infection worsens, and Katniss knocks him out with sleep syrup to retrieve medicine from the Cornucopia. She narrowly survives a fight but gets the medicine. Days of rain pass, and when it stops, they search for food. Katniss finds Peeta collected poisonous berries, causing another tribute’s death. Cato remains their only threat. Streams dry up, forcing them toward the Cornucopia’s lake.

Cato charges toward them, pursued by mutant wolves made from dead tributes. Katniss and Peeta climb the Cornucopia. The wolves kill Cato, and Katniss shoots him to end his suffering. They prepare to eat poisonous berries to defy the Capitol’s one-winner rule. The Capitol stops them, declaring both Katniss and Peeta as winners.

Returning home, Katniss is isolated for a while, fearing the Capitol’s wrath. In the final interview, Peeta learns about the strategy behind their romance during the Games, feeling hurt. In District 12, they briefly hold hands, hiding their true feelings to protect their loved ones.

Just finished reading this again. I was drawn in just like the first time. Getting into the mind of Katniss in this post-war dystopian story is thought provoking. Rereading after seeing the prequel on screen.

The last thing Katniss does before the reaping is to go hunting with Gale. One in Panem, Haymitch, the former Victor offers to mentor them together or separately, and Peeta and Katniss decide they are fine staying together. During the interviews Peeta tells all of Panem and everyone who is watching that his secret crush has always been Katniss. She's angry because it makes her feel weak, but Haymitch says that it made her appear desired. Katniss never knows if Peeta is for real or if he is playing to sponsors. When it gets right down to it, Peeta and Katniss are really just simple young people from a poor area. Peeta is a very kind boy with a good heart, and Katniss has a good heart but she is more suspicious. Katniss made an ally with a young girl that reminded her of Prim, her hame was Rue, both flowers. Rue dies and breaks Katniss' heart, and she puts flowers in her hair before her body is taken. Peeta and Katniss never quite succumb to the blood madness of the Hunger Games.Although there is more to the story that leads to the ultimate success, the real success was keeping their humanity, something that seems to get whittled away even in day to day life. There were more winners than just Katniss and Peeta in the story, it's just less obvious.

I loved this entire series and have re-read it three times since I got it last year. I love the characters and the plot is amazingly well written. 24 tributes, 12 girls and 12 boys. A girl and boy from each district, get chosen (reaped) each year to compete in the annual Hunger Games, where the only rule is kill or be killed. The people in charge of the games are the Capitol who only have the Hunger Games so they can show the districts (1 through 12) who is really the boss, after the districts waged war on the capitol 74 years ago. Enter Katniss Everdeen. Katniss is from district 12, which is the poorest district and farthest from the capitol. When her little sister is reaped for the Hunger Games, Katniss volunteers for her instead and ends up heading to the Capitol. The characters are great in this story and even though it is action packed there is still romance and drama within the pages. Highly recommend this to anybody over the age of 10, as plot is extremely dark but not highly inn...More

This was a reread having read the book for the first time over a decade ago. I still love this book as much as I did the first time. What I love so much about this book is how it points out the effects of war on people. The ugly side of capitalistic society. The ignorance of devoted patriotism. Suzanne Collins does a beautiful job of portraying all of this through the eyes of a teenage girl who truly just really wants to just get home to her younger sister and make sure she is ok.Also pointing out the harsh reality of being the first born daughter and having to step up into the role of parenthood when you yourself are just a child and how it can cause you to think that those who say they love you have a hidden agenda.

Suzanne Collins is wildly talented. I reread this one as an adult and my whole perspective changed on this one. I am so impressed with Collins' commentary on society with this one.

There's are some minor editorial issues and one continuity issue that irked me. Where you can see Katniss grasp that Peeta does love her and then seems to immediately forget it. Instead of just waxing over it like previously only to go back to waxing over it like she thinks Peeta is a master strategist. The story is good a dose of Romeo and Juliet some great Shakespeare tragedy. The dystopia is great. Plausible and still futuristic. Susan must have had a hard run in Hollywood

I knew of the popularity of The Hunger Games and have never read the books or watched the movies so I decided to give the books a try. I'm not sure what I expected but I am impressed by Suzanne's creativity and detail of all aspects of creating the Districts, Characters and The Hunger Games itself. I was debating between 4 or 5 stars and even though I typically avoid books with blood/gore this was surprisingly tolerable. I love how compassionate Katniss is in the midst of survival. She realizes that the Capital knows in order for people to be able to commit murder, humans have to dehumanize one another in order to justify the act of killing in their minds. I'm definitely torn like Katniss between Gale and Peeta; my heart goes out to Gale because he's always been there with Katniss and understands her but Peeta has loved her since he could remember. I'm curious to see what happens in the future books and will continue to read this series.

This book was so good because everything was so unexpected and I didn't know how it was going to end. I'm not much of a reader, but I couldn't stop myself from reading it. I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND READING THIS BOOK, and I'm about to read the other two.

I loved the progression of the book. It wasn't too fast or slow paced. I definitely loved to see Katniss slowly fall for Peeta without realizing it. I'm intrigued to see how their romance is gonna pan out in the next book.
