“The Great Alone” by Kristin Hannah tells the story of a Vietnam War veteran who takes his family to live in Alaska in the 1970s. It’s a captivating novel that delves into themes of survival, love, and resilience, as they confront the tough trials of solitude and the breathtaking yet harsh Alaskan wilderness.

Book Summary

In 1974, the Allbright family, consisting of Ernt, Cora, and Leni, moves from Seattle to Kaneq, Alaska. Ernt, a Vietnam veteran with mental issues, is given land in Alaska by his friend Bo Harlan. The family hopes this move will help Ernt cope with his discontent with society. However, they quickly realize they are ill-prepared for survival. They befriend the Harlan family and their neighbor Marge, who helps them settle.

Leni starts school and befriends Matthew, the only kid her age. Her dad, Ernt, clashes with Matthew’s dad, Tom, at a community party. Despite this, Leni and Matthew stay friends. After Matthew’s mom’s death, he moves away, but they keep in touch via letters.

The Allbrights learn survival skills from the community, but Ernt’s anger grows. He spends time with Earl Harlan, drinking and worrying about an impending war. Ernt becomes abusive, and Leni witnesses her parents’ physical fight.

Wolves kill their livestock one night, prompting a visit to town. Tom Walker helps them, but Ernt lashes out, locking Leni out and abusing Cora. Leni decides to escape with her mom but ends up in a hospital after a moose encounter.

Four years pass, and Ernt’s behavior temporarily improves. Matthew returns, and he and Leni secretly date. Tensions rise in Kaneq, and Ernt’s actions become erratic. He builds a barricade around his property, frightening Leni and Cora.

Leni and Cora decide to escape. When they encounter Matthew in town, Ernt abuses Cora. Matthew saves them, but a mountain incident leaves him severely injured. Cora shoots Ernt when he abuses Leni. They hide his body and escape to Seattle.

Years later, in 1986, Leni has graduated college and raised her son, MJ. Cora dies of lung cancer, leaving a confession for Ernt’s murder. Leni returns to Alaska, ends up in jail, but is freed thanks to Tom. She reunites with Matthew and they start a family.

Leni becomes a renowned photographer, cherishing the Alaskan wilderness. She holds a funeral for Cora and reflects on her journey.

Fully enjoyed this story of hardship and courage, love and tragedy, and weakness and strength. Woven beautifully, this tale is about fighting to survive and the value in doing the right thing. Deep insight into abusive relationships and why they are so hard to leave is described with sensitivity and compassion for both people.

This isn't even close to the other 2 books of hers I've read. It's depressing, predictable. It drones on and on until the end, then a lot of story is crammed into the ending. Everyone is an outsider except the main characters? So it's unbelievable too. I only finished it cuz I always finish a book! I do not recommend it.

This is another excellent story by Kristin Hannah! She made me feel like I know more about what it was like to live in a remote part of Alaska at that time. It was good to the very last page!

This book was recommended to me by several people. It was a very enlightening, sad story. If you or someone you know served in Vietnam, this is a good read. The husband served and came home a different man, mentally. His wife and daughter tried their best to help him through the tough times. They uprooted and moved to Alaska to give him some peace and quiet. Sometimes, life doesnt turn out the way you think it will.

The first half was a difficult read for me. I contemplated quitting it. It was depressing and frustrating at times and I actually had to Google “is The Great Alone worth finishing?”. I put my faith in the characters Hannah created, and the many 5 star reviews, and kept going. I can tell you wholeheartedly, yes, it is definitely worth finishing. I'm sure this book is one that will claim a permanent space in my mind for years to come.

Book cover came completely bent in packaging. Looks like it was just throw into the bag without care. There is a permanent crease in the book. I take very good care of my books and this is not acceptable

I really wanted to love this book! I liked it and it kept my attention for the 500+ pages. There was a lot of hype surrounding this book, so my expectations were high. The book was a good read and I would recommend it. Slight spoiler alert (of what does not happen rather than what does happen)…-The title is contradictory to theme of the book.-the ending does not disappoint, but is predictable.-some big events towards the end unfold and wrap up in just a few pages. They deserved more time and evolution within the storyline.- Hannah writes with much detail and describes Alaska beautifully, however it becomes very repetitive.- the eminent danger of Alaska wildlife is constantly foreshadowed, but doesn't ever happen.

It was so good I read the whole thing in one night, I love when a book can just pull you in like that. I cried and cried throughout the last chapters of this book and I think my heart is broken now but it was worth it.

Hannah Kristen winds this novel like an icy river through frozen woods. You're cold throughout the whole novel and you feel like preparing for winter by hunting and gardening and dehydrating everything in sight. The heroine is young , wise beyond her years and through her eyes you see an abusive relationship and what happens. I call this The Great Read!

Starting in the 1970s this story begins about a family where the husband has come home from Vietnam and how he is so different than the man who went to Vietnam. What you find throughout the story is that it is about so much more than this one family and the hidden secrets that they have, the things that they endure and more importantly, the things that they survive. You learn about Alaska, and all of its beauty that radiates every day. You are drawn in to feel the darkness that happens in Alaska and what that means not just for this family, but for everybody who lives in the community. You are shown just how important community can be and what other people are willing to do when they believe in something.Kristin Hannah does an exquisite job of making you feel everything that everybody is feeling. You will find yourself holding your breath on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what comes next. The story has long, lasting love, all the love, Young love, it showcases the love between parents and children in multiple ways in multiple generations, and how there can be so many different outcomes and scenarios. You will find yourself wrapped up in so much loss, but not always the type of loss you think may be coming. Some may be loss of a person, some may be loss of hope, of faith, of a relationship, the lengths that some people will go to in the name of love are breathtaking, painful, and shocking.I can only imagine which each person felt throughout this book, and how that affected every choice that they made. You discover that there are always consequences to whatever choice you make sometimes good sometimes bad, but you have to live with that. From chapter 26 to the end of the book in itself is some of the most incredible heart wrenching written words I have ever read in my life. If all of this authors books are like that, I can only imagine months filled with tears. I cried so hard and uncontrollably for the last several chapters that my poor husband had no idea what was going on. While this book is long, I implore you to stick with it and finish it because it is a literary great novel that I hope will someday be made into a movie or a TV series.

I probably read the first time 8 or 10 years ago. Passed the book on to a friend and had to buy it again to reread. It's fabulous if you grew during the Viet Nam war and had hippy parents to get away from the hippocritical world after the 60's ended. But if you have dreamt of going to Alaska and finding a new life, it is the epitomy of their new world.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Kristin Hannah is a joy to read; even as the subject matter is often heart wrenching. She doesn't sugercoat life events; she pulls her readers right into the emotions and environment of her characters. Home Alone shows us human strength, anxiety, and life challenges mixed with beauty and the tragic harshness Alaska can offer.
