Book Summary

“The Family Across The Street” is a gripping psychological thriller set in Australia, where a seemingly perfect family, the Wests, hides dark secrets behind closed doors on Hogarth Street. The story unfolds through the perspectives of former bad boy Logan, nosy neighbor Gladys, Katherine, and her mysterious captor. The narrative begins with a dangerous crisis in Katherine’s house, prompting a rewind to the past few hours to reveal the events leading up to the tragedy.

The characters of Logan and Gladys, both grappling with challenging circumstances, add depth to the story. Logan, haunted by his troubled past, seeks redemption and battles societal judgment. Gladys cares for her husband with Parkinson’s and strives to combat loneliness by forming human connections.

The tension intensifies as we delve into Katherine and her captor’s viewpoints, exposing the crisis within their family, particularly the danger faced by their 5-year-old twins. Violence and the presence of a gun heighten the stakes. The novel delves into psychological themes, exploring the impact of parenting on a child’s psyche. Katherine worries about her marriage’s state and its potential effects on her twins, while Logan grapples with the consequences of his mother’s failures.

The seemingly idyllic setting of Hogarth Street conceals the most disturbing secrets. The new family, the Wests, raises suspicions among neighbors as they isolate themselves. The narrative builds towards a tragic revelation on the hottest day of the year, shattering the illusions of the welcoming community. As sirens wail and the truth unravels, the families of Hogarth Street realize that their lives will never be the same again. “The Family Across The Street” poses the chilling question: How well do you truly know your neighbors?

Thank you to my partners, Rachel's Random Resources, The Bold BookClub, and NetGalley. I appreciate the gifted eARC and am leaving this review voluntarily.1. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? - There are two main plot lines. Although they do somewhat connect, I just didn't see the relevance of the two plots in one story. It is nice that some closure is felt when we get to the end. Although it was a little too late for full closure, they all came together to create harmony.2. 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬, 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - When push comes to shove, true friends will find their way through to the other end. Also, when a person will go to the ends of the Earth for another, you know that it is true love and it does overcome all. In the end, there is no doubt that the ultimate reveal is a worthy reason for what transpired in the story.

I don't know what I expected from this book but it was totally different from what I got. To me it wasn't a psychological thriller but kind of a tossed together mish mash. I kept waiting for the thriller but it never happened.

This was a GOOD ONE! My suspicions landed on a few characters, but after all the twists and turns, I was wrong.Very well written with great story arcs and good sub-plots. Jed finding who his real father was; the cops ever reaching to be the best in their investigative skills and questioning skills, surprises about the holiday trip. Great details given to build the characters and switching to their train of thoughts without losing the reader for timelines and following the story. Will be looking for more books by this author for sure!!

First book I've read by Anita Waller. I will definitely be reading more. Loved the depth of each of the characters and the twists and turns that the book took.

The title and cover drew me in but neither of them seemed to fit the story. Lots of talk about coffee and tea. The dialog with the police felt unrealistic. The sudden end felt rushed and convenient.

This is a great mystery. There are two different storylines. You want to keep reading to solve the mystery. A must read.

So many details about each of their lives but a pointless story about a family. Nothing connected.. what with the accident, what with the illegitimate relationships... sad ending...can in no way be characterized as a psychological thriller.

I liked some of the humor of this book. As far as what I didn't like, in general it was not my type of story. I wouldn't call it a psychological thriller as advertised.

I don't really understand why there was the second storyline in the book. It didn't really fit with the main murder part ???

Based on the description on the book about it being a psychological thriller, I was expecting a lot. Unfortunately it did not live up to my expectations. It was not suspenseful and by the time the “who done it” was revealed, I didn't care too much. The writing was too detailed at times, to the point of it becoming somewhat boring. I did finish it, which is why I gave it 3 stars. It's “nice”, if that helps.

A pleasant enough read with potential, just a little anticlimactic. Fairly predictable. The title really isn't reflective of the story as well.

I almost stopped reading this book so many times but the reviews made me push through. For it to be branded a “page-turning psychological thriller,” I was less than thrilled. I was expecting a lot more.

It was a bit of a rough read due to the language of some English or British slang words I wasn't familiar with. I found it a bit too wordy which made it seem slow paced. I did like most of the characters.

Slightly holiday book with ups and downs. The plot twist was too sudden and gave way to a quick ending. Well written and great characters.

I enjoyed this book, and as I got into it, I couldn't put it down. BUT the ending absolutely ruined it for me. I'm sure some authors think they have to have this unbelievable ending to top off a great read. But what they actually are doing is ruining what could have been a great book. The book was well written and had enough surprises throughout the story. It did not require an "Oh, my God, I can't believe she's ending it like this."

All the hype at the beginning with John leaving a widow and a secret in the desk, I thought this novel would be about one thing but was about another. The author used the word “muddled” too much and I was glad when it stopped. There was no birthday celebration for Jed and the author must have forgotten that his birthday was on Christmas. The murderer was no surprise at all - mostly predictable and could have easily been hidden. I was hoping it was someone else and maybe a case of mistaken identity, but no! There were a lot of missed opportunities in this one. I felt like the novel started off with one arc but ended up with a different one.

I almost gave up on this one. There's a lot going on as far as story lines and it was slow to get into but I made myself stick it out. Not the worst I've read but no where near a “must read” recommendation to others. Just meh!

It was a good book BUT I felt it had too many underlying themes that had to be disected. Each could have been a plot if their own. I would have liked more character development.

The story line was very good but it had a lot of on the nose writing, weak adjectives and other unnecessary words besides those included in the on the nose writing.

Great read. Kept my interest, even in the epilogue. Thanks. Never imagined the details would bring the story to life. Really needs to be made into a movie.

Slower than a sloth trying to cross the street. I got to the ending and thought, was that seriously it? It felt like the twist wasn't a twist. It was fairly obvious once a certain incident was introduced into the story.

...is more a domestic novel, rather then a page turning psychological thriller, as pegged by Amazon. A murder happens on page 97. Then it becomes a murder mystery novel. Nothing remotely psychological about the story

It's not a “must read”. I would definitely not classify this book as a thriller. It's a good past-time, easy, no brained read. In my opinion, the ending is flat.

The story ended up being more like 3. The connections were jumbled and kind of unnecessary if the central plot point is murder. How some of the characters handled their emotions was extreme. For such a short book, it was a long read.
