Book Summary

The story is set in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, and is told from multiple perspectives. Meredith, a young mother and doula, receives threatening texts from her neighbor Cassandra, who wrongly believes Meredith is having an affair with her husband. Cassandra confronts Meredith, ending their friendship. Meanwhile, Meredith gets involved in a medical malpractice suit against an obstetrician.

One night, Meredith and her husband Josh meet neighbors Kate and Bea. They celebrate Bea’s birthday, and Meredith offers to stay with Bea while the others leave. On the way home, Meredith and Bea accidentally hit and kill a woman named Shelby. Bea convinces Meredith to help hide the body.

As guilt consumes Meredith, Bea frames Shelby’s husband for the murder. When Meredith tries to confess, Bea kills her and hides Meredith’s daughter, Delilah. A pair of copycat criminals kidnaps another girl, Carly, brainwashing her to believe she is Delilah. After 11 years, Carly escapes and is mistakenly sent to live with Meredith’s family. Leo, Meredith’s son, discovers the truth through a photo and confronts the police officer who covered it up.

The police find Delilah in Bea’s attic, leading to Bea’s arrest. Delilah is reunited with her family, Carly returns home, but the story hints at the lasting trauma caused by Bea’s actions, with justice served but unresolved consequences.

The plot was riveting and full of twists and turns but the disjointed way of storytelling in past and present wasn't great. The flashbacks weren't fluid and sometimes I felt like there were too many unimportant scenes and characters.

I read a lot of books, many different styles, and this one was just so bad. I have never read a book with so many 2 or 3 word sentences. The descriptions of events were just awful. It rained almost every single day because I think the author had no other ideas on how to make things dramatic. And some of the ideas were so far- fetched. They were walking outside in pouring rain and she heard a man breathing behind them. Seriously? How do you hear someone breathing in a downpour? And the main plot was so unbelievable. I had to finish reading it but all I could do was roll my eyes for the majority of what I was reading. Just not good . Would not recommend this book.

Do not read if you have childhood PTSD or are sensitive about child abuse. Not as graphic as one could have made it, but not just a normal thriller, mystery book.

The writing in this book was the worst I have ever read.My thoughts were that this was written by a 10 year old.

What?! The characters in this book are easy to relate to, to feel for. I found myself looking forward to updates from each point of view. It's written, mostly, from three different POVs. The story kicks off strong and eventually circles back around. I feel like it didn't leave anything unanswered. This book kept me engaged and guessing from page 1. There wasn't a single point during this book that I felt as if I knew what was going on. While the main points of the story could have been shortened and condensed, the side stories feed into it and build the suspense. This is a great book if you're looking for something hard to put down, will keep you guessing, and wraps up nicely. It didn't have the usual twists and turns in a thriller that I have come to expect and love, but I kept picking it up every chance I got. I surprised myself by reading it in just two days.

Read this in just over a day. This is my first experience with Mary Kubica and I will definitely read more of her books. The story flowed nicely, without unnecessary fluff, which I appreciate. Well done!

This book was awful, the storyline made no sense. It felt like a few novels, which had nothing to do with one another, all mashed together and then the author tried to string them together in the final few chapters.

4.25⭐️That was good! So many twists and turns, and so much drama! I could barely keep up, the suspense was great! The ending really threw me for a loop, the way everything went down and so quickly, but I'll say I wasn't completely surprised “who did it!” This story was one big roller coaster ride…truly!! It would make a great Netflix limited series with all that drama!!🎢🎢🎧I highly recommend the audible!

I enjoyed this story it was different and thrilling and keeps your guessing until the end.The beginning chapter was a little redundant however as it went on it got better and the story was awesome.I did feel like the ending was rushed wish it had been dragged out a little more and not so quick to make everyone live happily ever after. That's the reason for the four stars. The plot was riveting. I enjoyed it very much.

This "thriller" is unbelievably slow. I almost gave up on it several times, and after reading the ending, I wish I had. This book tells me I won't read anymore books by this author.

This book was a whirlwind from start to finish! I felt like I had whiplash from all the twists and turns. I listened to this via audiobook and I would highly recommend that. I appreciated the various POVs and usually I don't like multiple POV books. This story will leave you reeling!

I dont usually write book reviews as I think it is very subjective based ont he reader. For me, I love mysterys especially psychological thrillers such as The Silent Patient, Verity, and Rebecca. This books jumps back and forth in timeline with several different vantage points. Personally, I felt like there were flaws in the characters themselves (inconsistency in personality, not very believable). Somewhere in the middle, I was bored but pushed through. And the end didnt make sense logically. I wont give spoilers but all in all i felt you see the authors attempt at misdirection. It was a decent, easy read. To me, not really a thriller as it wasnt scary but has the hollywood like effects intended to create terror (dark parking garage, rainy nights, etc etc). I saved this book to read on a trip because of all the good reviews and was left disappointed as it didnt live up to hype.

I enjoyed the book but really wish they would have done something more with the chapter titles. I sometimes go back and forth with the kindle and the audiobook. That made it a nightmare figuring out where I was when the chapter names are just alternating first names of a small handful of people.

I could not figure out where this one was going. I did not guess the outcome. I usually don't like books that jump back and forth in the timeline, but it worked for this story. Only thing that kept it from being 5 stars was a couple of aspects being a bit too unrealistic.

I'm a huge fantasy book lover but between series I just love me a one day thriller read. Five stars is achieved if I make it to the end without figuring it out and this book made five stars. I had lots of ideas and turned out to be pleasantly surprised by the twist

It's hard to believe so many people enjoyed this book. While it started out okay, I found that by mid-way I didn't like the main character at all. I wasn't sure if it was intentional or not but her tone became cold and the author's sentences were short and not very descriptive. Towards the end I felt like I wished I didn't waste my time on this.

I found this book very engaging and interesting, and I absolutely would have given it 5 stars, but the ending just too unbelievable and sort of put a cloud over the rest of the book. It was a quick read with a lot of good twists.

SPOILERS AHEAD.I have a lot of issues with this book. When I read the sample I read the story of a girl kept in a basement. That's the girl I wanted to find out about. Turns out she's just some way to jump the shark. She's like an afterthought thrown in to try and create a twist. It's all related and you can tell who the bad guy is pretty early. It was a good read, don't get me wrong. I enjoyed it. I read it in less than 24 hours but it's disappointing that the story I paid to read is like a footnote in a different story. It's misleading and less interesting. :/ worth the read but kind of upsetting.
