“House of Earth and Blood” by Sarah J. Maas is a fantasy novel about Bryce Quinlan, a woman who is part human and part fae. She joins forces with a captivating fallen angel to solve a string of brutal murders in a world where magic and danger come together. This is an exciting story filled with themes of redemption, love, and mystery.

Book Summary

Party-loving Bryce Quinlan is heartbroken when her best friend, a wolf shifter named Danika, is brutally murdered along with her entire pack inside Bryce’s apartment. To make matters worse, Bryce finds a deadly demon called a kristallos lurking in her home. This demon is summoned from the depths of Hel and is on a mission to track down a powerful artifact known as Luna’s Horn. This horn, a Fae relic, is currently broken, but it could be fixed and used to open a portal that would allow dangerous creatures from Hel to invade Midgard.

Archangel Micah assigns Bryce an unusual partner to help her on this perilous mission: Hunt Athalar, a fallen angel and Micah’s personal assassin. Initially, Hunt is put off by Bryce’s carefree attitude, while she finds his domineering behavior off-putting. Together, they explore various magical realms within Crescent City, gathering clues. The evidence suggests that Danika stole the Horn to prevent it from being used to open a portal to Hel. They also discover that a new synthetic magical drug called “synth” might hold the key to repairing the artifact.

As Bryce and Hunt work together, they bond over their shared experiences of loss. Bryce mourns the loss of Danika, while Hunt is still haunted by the death of his archangel lover, Shahar, during a failed angel rebellion. Hunt is now bound to do Micah’s bidding for eternity unless he can find the demon and recover the Horn. As they get closer to solving the mystery of the missing Horn, both Bryce and Hunt struggle to let go of their past grief.

The shocking revelation comes when Micah is exposed as the true villain, with intentions to open a portal to build his own army. To prevent this, Danika had ground the Horn into powder and tattooed it onto Bryce’s back. Bryce, being a half-Fae princess, possesses the gift of Starborn light. When Micah activates the Horn and opens a portal to Hel, Bryce uses her unique power to seal the portal and save the residents of Crescent City. This heroic act nearly costs her life, but Hunt manages to revive her from a near-death experience. Together, they find a way to move beyond their past losses and embrace the potential for a future filled with love and hope.

It took a while to get into this one. But eventually it picked up and I'm very glad I stuck around. Very worth it. Even though I ended up crying a lot towards the end!!!

One more book and I'll have read all of the Sarah J Maas collection and I can't... Man I cried so much at this one. Every single book has gotten better.Still too many uses of "apex, kernel, and snarl" but I'm still so happy with this multiverse SJM has created. What a fantastic story maker.

Took only 570 pages to get in to but those last 230 pages were good. She expo dumps a lot. I mean a lot but the only way she could have done it naturally was by writing an 8 book series or more to explain all the magical elements in this books. I can see how not everyone likes this. It did remind me of video game worldbuilding where they through you right in to the action and you have to find out about this full fleshed out world by continuing the video game.

EEEEEEMOTIONAL DAAAAMAAAAGEThis book pulled me straight out of my reading slump, and made me feel all the feelings. Bryce is a baddie and Hunt might be Book Boyfriend #1. Sarah J Maas does a phenomenal job bringing characters to life and fully immersing you into her world. So many plot twists, jaw drops, and squeals of delight at the sassy banter.“That's the point of it, Bryce. Of life. To live, to love, knowing that it might all vanish tomorrow. It makes everything that much more precious.”

The first 25% of this book was a trudge. A lot of world building that happens a bit too quickly in my opinion, a bit overwhelming. I had come across a few people that stated to listen to the audiobook for the first few chapters if you were struggling, so, like lorcan, I did. It helped tremendously, once I got past that 25%? Inhaled the rest of the book. I was on my toes for the entirety of the rest of it. 4.5/5, but the app only allows for full stars and Bryce is a 5 star girlie.

The first 100ish pages are heavy with world-building, I actually put it down for a few weeks before coming back to the book but stick with it, picks up after that!

I loved the art of this book I think it looks so cool but the actual material was soooo confusing and I really just couldn't make it past the first 6 chapters. I really tried, I'll pick it back up after I finish reading TOG because I love me some SJM and I'd love to experience the crescent city series

It's so fun! The characters are so relatable, the world is complex, the lore fascinating, and the mysteries within mysteries make all 799 pages just fly by.

I waited a year to finish this book. Tried reading it and made through about 40% before I realized I wanted the audiobook. Well, read the ebook along with the audiobook and to say I bawled is an understatement.Bryce, our heroine, goes through so much in this book and her story gripped me, especially in the latter half of the book. Her story was so moving and I found her to be incredibly likable and relatable. It was a five star read for me, a perfect blend of world immersion, romance, fantasy, action, and drama. On my second attempt at reading it, I couldn't put it down. Going straight into book two with no regrets. It's THAT good.

Just buy it and start reading! It is fantastic and will suck you in immediately. She just writes the best characters and friendships and I just love this world and this book. Be warned - I think I sobbed harder than I ever have in a book. Truly could not read the pages for the tears in my eyes.

This was one of the best books of the year for me! Everything about it is fantastic- characters, world building, and story. Even with all the world building it was still fast pased. So much was happening, but it was never confusing. I loved the slow burn romance, and that while important, it was just a part of the overall story. I'm glad I get to start the next book so I get to spend more time with them all.

The world building was massive, I had to take breaks to clear my head space it took me 3Xs as long to read this book than it normally would but the last 1/4 of the book was worth the persistence and I am looking forward to House of Sky and Breath.

I don't read or listen to a book for basically a book of swearing. Can you not write without a swear word in nearly every sentence? Can you not have your characters speak intelligently? Or must they sound like the freshman wing of a high school at all times. The storyline may be a good one, but who cares when the writing is over 50% swearing. Please, that's ridiculous and not worth my time. Educated people do not speak this way, and a book worth reading is not written this way.

For the people that say they're waiting on the next ACOTAR, why have you not read this already?!? This book is absolutely amazing. I think it's her best work yet. One of the best books I've read all year and I don't know what took me so long.

Just like SJM, the last 100 pages had me bawling. This is such a good story: all the drawn-out banter and slow realization of feeling from Freysand all the pain and healing of Nessian. Clear a weekend and get engrossed.

Okay so I heard SO MANY good and bad things about this book and how literally the first 100-200 pages was a bunch of information and a ton of jibber-ish. But I'm so happy I went in this book blind!I had an open mind and an open heart and I loved everything about this book. The way the story went how all the twist and turns with the mystery and then you add all the fantasy you can imagine?? Sarah J Mass can forever take my money. I felt the grief that Bryce felt and I felt the “hard rock” place for Hunt as he was trapped between his people and his heart. It's a book that makes you laugh, teary eye, sad, mad and feel all the emotions in every chapter! 10/10. Would recommend.

Honestly, this is the best of SJM writing and storytelling that I've read. The character and storyline development are paced well and fleshed out nicely, which has been my biggest gripe with the ACOTAR series. The spicy content is less in this book but the drawn out tension and emotional connection still sizzles. To me, this is an almost perfectly balanced example of what I think "Romantasy" should be. It has a complex world and cast of characters with emotional connection (of various kimds, too!) at it's core.

, because this book was phenomenal. Yes the information dump was a lot to process, yes it took me like a month to get through it, but I did and this book was PHENOMENAL. Seriously I love Bryce and Hunt and Lele and Ruhn and Danika. I love this book. Top 10 for sure.

No clue what is happening in the beginning, there are so many characters and creatures and houses it was annoying. But then the story starts and you're like ok it's a fantasy mystery, cool, and then the last 20% of the book- amazing. Like I said “one more chapter” about twenty times. I also sobbed at one point, which rarely happens for me.Just do it. Get past the first part and it all comes together.

I hesitated to read this book because heard many people say it was slow for the first 300 pages. I found that not to be true. It was engaging the whole way through. I enjoyed the rollercoaster plot twist and ugly cried three times.

I am not really sure how to even put into words my feelings here. It is unlike anything I have ever read and truly did not read like the other SJM books! There is a TON of world building (I expected this with fantasy but it was a LOT) and it seems like you are simply thrown into the world for the first 600 pages 😂 She really throws ya to the wolves 😝 I did like these wolves - cough CONNOR! 🥰🙃If you enjoy murder mystery/thriller books, this is for you friend! There is a sprinkle of romance that heats up slowly as we progress with the book! We all know Liv would have loved more romance 😂👏🏻Definitely some twists and turns towards the end that will make you jump- Those last hundred pages read more like the SJM from previous books for me.I am truly curious about several world aspects that may be explained in later books! If you read this one, be prepared to put your detective cap on, take some notes and enjoy the mystery!

I was excited to start this series based on great reviews; however this book read like a draft in need of editing. Main characters were caricatures in need of more development. In my opinion this was a great start that didn't properly finish its development.

The book starts off a bit different than the other books that I have read with this author but, as you would expect, the end gets you every time. It took me a bit concentration to keep up with reading this book but once you get into it, the story is fantastic.

did not enjoy. Repetitive. The character reactions to such minor everyday issues were so overdramatic. No real substance in 90% of this book. Tried to give this writer another look but no. Not for me.
