“A Court of Wings and Ruin” is a fantasy book by Sarah J. Maas, and it’s the third book in the “A Court of Thorns and Roses” series. It’s about Feyre Archeron, the main character, who deals with war, politics, danger, and tricky relationships in the magical realm of Prythian.

Book Summary

In the magical realm of Prythian, Rhysand (known as Rhys), the High Lord of the Night Court, tells a short prologue set 500 years before the main series. This prologue takes place two years before the end of an ancient war to free humans from faerie enslavement. In this war, the seven Prythian courts are divided: some are fighting for human freedom, while others are helping a different faerie realm called Hybern to keep humans enslaved.

Part 1 of the story starts a few weeks after the events of “A Court of Mist and Fury.” Feyre Archeron left Tamlin, the High Lord of the Spring Court, for her true love, Rhysand. Feyre, who was once human, died saving Prythian from the evil faerie queen Amarantha and was brought back to life as an immortal High Fae. However, Tamlin’s possessiveness hindered her recovery, leading Rhysand to rescue her from an unwanted marriage to Tamlin. Feyre and Rhysand fell in love while trying to stop the King of Hybern from using a powerful Cauldron to enslave humans once again. Tamlin, in a misguided attempt to win Feyre back, aligned himself with Hybern, which resulted in Feyre’s sisters, Nesta and Elain, becoming High Fae as well. Feyre pretended to still love Tamlin and returned to the Spring Court as a spy, secretly marrying Rhysand and becoming the High Lady of the Night Court.

Feyre’s mission is to undermine Tamlin’s authority and weaken Hybern’s influence in Prythian. She orchestrates a situation that forces Tamlin to choose between his unpopular alliance with Hybern and his loyal sentry, causing him to lose his men’s trust. A delegation from Hybern, including Jurian, a resurrected human warrior, arrives in Prythian. Feyre discovers Hybern’s plan to destroy the Wall separating the faerie and mortal realms and returns to the Night Court with Lucien, Tamlin’s emissary, who is also her sister Elain’s mate.

In Part 2, Feyre reunites with Rhysand in the Night Court and they work together with their friends to build alliances before the impending war with Hybern. Feyre’s sisters struggle to adapt to their new lives as High Fae; Nesta is bitter, and Elain is grieving the loss of her human fiancé, making her distant from Lucien. Elain’s mysterious dream-communication troubles her sisters, and Feyre worries about Rhysand’s willingness to sacrifice himself for the war effort. Rhys’s allies, Cassian, Azriel, and Morrigan, help strategize, and Nesta trains her newfound magical powers with Amren, an otherworldly creature bound to a High Fae body. Amren believes Nesta’s connection to the Cauldron will be valuable.

Desperate for allies, Feyre seeks the help of the Bone Carver, an ancient death-god, in exchange for the Ouroboros mirror, which is said to be deadly to anyone who looks into it. Feyre and Nesta are attacked by Hybern spies while researching in the Velaris library, leading Feyre to make a deal with a monster named Bryaxis. Feyre also discovers Elain’s ability to predict events through her dreams, identifying her as a seer. Lucien embarks on a quest to find a potential ally, a human queen named Vassa, based on Elain’s vision.

Hybern attacks the Summer Court, prompting Feyre, Rhysand, and their friends to come to their aid and secure a hard-fought victory. However, the battle exposes Feyre and Rhys’s strained relationship with Tarquin, the High Lord of the Summer Court, whom they had previously betrayed in their efforts to thwart Hybern.

At the council of High Lords, old conflicts threaten the success of their war efforts. Tamlin surprises everyone by revealing himself as a double agent who has been feeding Hybern information in exchange for protection. An uneasy alliance forms, driven by Nesta’s principled appeal and Feyre’s embrace of her full powers. The following day, Hybern destroys the Wall using the Cauldron.

In Part 3, the war escalates. Despite her broken engagement, Elain’s former fiancé agrees to shelter human refugees at his estate. During negotiations, their group discovers that Jurian is also a double agent working to protect humans. The Prythian alliance engages Hybern forces in multiple battles, achieving narrow victories but failing to prevent Hybern from devastating the Spring Court and the human lands along the border.

Feyre makes a deal with Bryaxis to unleash the monster when they locate Hybern’s main forces, and she seeks help from the Suriel, a truth-telling faerie she had encountered before. The Suriel advises Nesta to scry for the Cauldron’s location and provides a clue meant for Amren before being killed by Ianthe. Feyre lures Ianthe into the Weaver’s cottage, where another death-god resides, killing Ianthe. Nesta successfully locates the Cauldron and Hybern’s forces, but the Cauldron kidnaps Elain in retaliation. Feyre and Azriel embark on a risky rescue mission, aided by Jurian and Tamlin.

The combined Prythian forces are greatly outnumbered by Hybern, prompting Feyre to confront the deadly Ouroboros mirror to save her loved ones. After seeing her true nature in the mirror, she gains the Bone Carver’s assistance. In the final battle, all seven Prythian Courts unite against Hybern, joined by unexpected allies from overseas, including Vassa and Feyre’s father. Despite Hybern’s overwhelming power, the King of Hybern is killed by Elain and Nesta, but his army continues to fight.

Amren tricks Feyre into releasing her true form through the Cauldron, which annihilates the Hybern forces but also shatters the Cauldron, destabilizing their world’s magic. Rhys sacrifices himself to empower Feyre to mend the Cauldron and save their world. Feyre demands that the High Lords resurrect Rhysand, just as they had resurrected her. With the war won, Feyre leads negotiations for peace between humans and faeries, returning home with her friends and family.

To be succint, so much filler, repetition, meaningless convos and interactions that neither advance the plot nor the characters' development. A pale shadow of the first two books, except for the characters. Lacking in continuity. Even in the realm of fantasy, there was many implausabilities. A lot of the characters were absolutely annoying - Nesta, Feyre, Rhys, etc.First book was quite good, second book was amazing, and third book was a shameless money grab. The first third of this installment was fairly intriguing and then it fell off a cliff. After pushing through to halfway, it's been a month since I've opened it and I've decided to just call it a day. It's no longer an enjoyable read, so why waste my time.

This book was a page turner from start to finish. Emotions ran wild... sadness, anger, frustration, love, empathy, gut wrenching sorry, happiness, love, connections, betrayal, fear, loss, excitement, anxiety, and yes love.

This whole series swallowed me up. But this book is my favorite. There's twists that I didn't see coming that I was pleasantly caught by surprise. The chapters are short, but it makes for good stopping points as I'm a busy parent and have to find a stop point often. The writer has a pattern of repeating herself occasionally, but the setting is always well described and the plot has you engaged, eager for what happens next.

My thoughts while reading:Sadly I didn't really like this book. I felt like there was so much going on. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it.Idk. There were a lot of deaths and of course Maas has a way of getting us in our feels and making us cry our eyes out. I loved that the enemies became good and helped with the war. I loved that we got to have more on Cassian and Nesta. I wish we could get like what is going on with them because the suspense is killing me!I feel like the war was kind of a place filler because there's still another 2 books! HOW! Like what is happening in the last book then?I hated how long everything took, I just couldn't get into it. Literally page 400 was when everything started getting good for me. AND THERE'S 700 PAGES! This one was just really hard for me.Overall not my favorite out of the series 3/5 stars. I enjoyed the first 2 books way more. I wanted to love it but…..

Is it as good as the second book? No. Not remotely. But it's not a romance so much as a war-focused ensemble romp where we assemble all our friends to fight the scary bad.It did offer enough seratonin to get me through a very rough week of PPD, so for that it was worth the money, even if it read like a fanfic of a much better book.

A fantastically written book. So much detail and thought put into this world.Feyre and Rhys work hard to figure out how to rally all of Prythian to fight the king of Hybern while picking out the traitors from the allies. There is a lot of war strategy and planning in this book but also an introduction to new characters and magical creatures.I also enjoyed the growing relationships between the side characters as well.If you enjoy fantasy lands and mystical battles, you will enjoy this book.

I will say I did enjoy the first half of this book. However the last half was…a little overzealous as it tried to navigate a war setting while simultaneously trying to make unique twists. There were moments were I was outright laughing at how awkward the ending was. It felt repetitive and forced.I want to read the rest of the series but not because I'm so in love with the series but rather because I feel the need to complete something I paid money for. If you've made it this far…buckle up for disappointment.

Sarah continues to bring characters of olde lore to life in ways that honour their history and shed new light on their existence. You are not just reading the story but are, in fact, an integral part of the whole. There are tears of anger and joy and despair. You will feel all of what is life. I hope you are reading it with a friend, as I've been privileged to read it with my own beautiful daughter. Sharing their world and the way it touches someone you can speak with, makes this so much ... more.I cannot worry that what I'll tell you is too revealing, because to read or hear these stories read, is to live truly. You will experience lust and fear and anger and confusion and disappointment and despair. And you will be changed. And you will thank Sarah for writing it and whoever suggested you read these books. We are all just so many flowers and vines and growing things in the garden of life. And you can never have too many gardens.

This one is my third favorite of the series (five books have been released at the time of this review). That sounds like it's meh but honestly books 2, 5, and 3 are all SO good it's hard to even say which is better. Highly recommend if you're into the series you continue to this one!

This book was really good and different than ACOTAR & ACOMAF in terms of: action, plot twist, the betrayal and romance. Until the end, I think SJM got a little drunk with the amount of drama and unexpected consequences.Still prefer ACOMAF over it.

I can't say enough good things about this book!!! It ties to my favorite ACOTAR book alongside A Court of Silver Flames. This book is romantic, spicy, treacherous, heartbreaking, inspiring, and so much more. The battle scene descriptions alone are amazingly done. I love seeing more of the other characters' relationships with one another blossom and come into their own. I love the found family aspect to this and Rhys and Feyre's relationship so much. I also love how we get to see the abilities of other characters in the book and get deeper insight into who they are as well. Absolute must read!!!

At times the phrases, dialogue, and scenarios became so repetitive that it snapped me out of the story and got a little annoying to read. But I really enjoyed the story and it had a pretty perfect HEA, if you can get over reading "Indeed" 83 times, sometimes multiple times in a single sentence.
